You see, we got on the topic of small time website entrepreneurs, many of them working out of their homes. Some of these websites are pretty darned classy I’ll have to admit. It is of course their attempt at branding, and although they may show some notoriety, original thinking, and the beginning essence of branding many of them fall short. Worse, if they ever hope to scale up their operations, their brands are left flat, uneventful, and unable to take it to the next level. Going from a small blog like website which perhaps sells various wares online to a much larger e-commerce site with a corporate look is entirely a different thing.

This of course is good branding comes in. But mind you, it’s not just websites, it’s all of these small businesses that people start, grow, and then try to expand – they could use a little better branding help. It’s much better if all of this is considered from the very start, even when penciling a rough draft for a business plan. You have to plan your brand, and allow your customers and clients to adopt your company brand and mission statement as a component of their life. If they do, they will continue to do business with you and promote your brand to all of their friends online, and refer you to their friends in the real world.

Some might say that it really doesn’t matter, and I suppose if you are running a small dog walking service, or selling something very simple, then any personal brand will work out fine in the beginning, but not as you grow the business into something large it’s important that you consider all this well in advance of even getting a business license, fictitious name statement, or starting a new company. Please consider all this and think on it.

Profile Page

Use the about page (if you do not see it, click profile on the left side) to give readers an overview of your business. While you are allowed a lot of room you want to keep a reader’s attention. Use whitespace, bold type, and bullet points when needed.

Be sure to include keywords for SEO purposes as well as relevant links to your website’s pages. There is also a “Contributor to” section on your profile page where you can add links to each of the blogs or websites in which you are a contributor.

A fantastic feature Google + has is its communities. I have heard many times that this was Google’s answer to Facebook’s groups. If it was, score one for Google. Unlike Facebook’s groups, you can join communities as a brand. This is an unbelievable way to market directly to your target audience. Tread lightly though, no one will pay any attention to you other than to report you if you spam and tirelessly promote yourself. Add insightful comments and relevant content to the communities you join. Participate in discussions, engage with others and users will find their way to your site through your profile page.

The types of communities are almost endless and they are perfect for learning about a topic that is of interest to you. You can even create your own community if you wish.

Posting to Google +

It is important to post regularly, I know you have heard that before, but even more important than the regularity of your posts to Google + is the uniqueness of the content you are posting. Yes, Google + is great for SEO. However, Google loves engaging, unique content. Write for your target audience and you can not go wrong.

Add pictures to your posts. People are very visual. Studies suggest that videos and pictures increase Internet user’s engagement. Interact with readers who comment on your content. Communicating with those important to your business is essential.
